Just as they did the first time Bonds visited, on Aug. 9, the Giants came from behind for a dramatic victory against the Dodgers . On Monday night, they scored twice in the eighth inning to beat their ancient rivals 5-4.
On a windy and freezing evening, with the atmosphere rivaling the times when Bonds wore a uniform, the Giants beat L.A. for the first time this season after the Dodgers swept them in Los Angeles earlier this month.
A crowd of 31,091 went berserk when the Giants took the lead in the eighth after squandering a 3-0 lead and falling behind 4-3, and even more berserk when Brian Wilson struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save one night after blowing a three-run lead in a 5-4 loss at Arizona.
quot;I feed off the positivity,quot; Wilson said. quot;You could see the fans, the emotion of the game. Once we got the lead, you could feel the sense of the crowd. I tried to be at one with the fans, give them what they wanted to see, not only a win against the Dodgers , a win against the first-place Dodgers .quot;
Barry Zito also liked what he felt and saw on a night he carried a 3-0 lead into the seventh but collect for his first win of the year.
quot;I like this team right now,quot; Zito said. quot;We were 2-7. Now we're at .500. That's something to be proud of.quot;
Moments after Bonds took his seat in the owners' section, the Giants scored three first-inning runs against Randy Wolf in a rally fueled by bad L.A. defense. Nonetheless, Randy Winn triple, Aaron Rowand double and Pablo Sandoval single contributed RBI hits.
Zito extended his scoreless streak to 13 innings before allowing a two-run Casey Blake homer in the seventh. The Dodgers went ahead 4-3 on Manny Ramirez's first RBI against the Giants this season, a single against Merkin Valdez.
The Giants came back against Ronald Belisario, starting the eighth with singles by Fred Lewis and Edgar Renteria. Rich Aurilia, batting fourth, tied the game with a right-side dribbler that Belisario tried to bat with his glove toward the plate. Aurilia knew Bonds was watching and said, quot;It felt weird hitting cleanup with that guy in the house.quot;
With one out, pinch-hitter Bengie Molina got Renteria home with a grounder to third, as Blake looked home, then threw to first.
quot;Edgar did a great job on that. He had a terrific jump,quot; manager Bruce Bochy said. quot;I don't think they had a shot at him.quot;
Enjoying it from the seats was Bonds, who decided to see a ballgame after flying from Los Angeles to attend a San Francisco ceremony Sunday in which the Dalai Lama presented a courage award to Christopher Laub, a young leukemia patient from Tiburon whom Bonds befriended in 2005.
In a brief pregame chat with reporters after he spent 45 minutes in the Giants' clubhouse, Bonds was asked about his status and said, quot;I just haven't retired. That's the only status I have. The only interest I have right now is to go to my seats and watch the Giants beat the Dodgers .quot;
On cue, they did, providing a good win heading into a game tonight against 4-0 starter Chad Billingsley.
