Dodgers-Phillies Preview 2008-08-25

Dodgers-Phillies Preview 2008-08-25
Earlier this month, the Philadelphia Phillies were knocked out of first place in the NL East after getting swept in a four-game series by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Less than two weeks later, they're primed to return the favor - and perhaps reclaim the division lead, too.

After a dramatic extra-inning win on Sunday night, the Phillies will look to ride a red-hot Brett Myers to a fourth straight victory over the Dodgers on Monday, when the teams conclude their series at Citizens Bank Park.

Philadelphia (71-59) was reeling after its trip to Los Angeles from Aug. 11-14, losing each game by two or fewer runs and getting pushed aside by the New York Mets for the top spot in the East.

Dodgers right-hander Hiroki Kuroda allowed two hits and one run in seven innings of a 3-1 victory in that series' finale, but another stellar start on Sunday didn't equal another win for Los Angeles (65-65).

This time, the Phillies managed just two hits and one run in six innings against Kuroda, but Pedro Feliz tied the game with an RBI single in the ninth and won it 5-2 with a three-run walk-off home run in the 11th.

"It's great for the team," Feliz said. "This was a big win."

Following a pair of seven-run wins over Los Angeles on Friday and Saturday and coupled with two straight Mets losses, the Phillies are now one-half game behind New York. The Mets also finish their series with Houston on Monday before visiting Philadelphia for two games this week.

The Phillies have won six of seven overall, receiving outstanding pitching over that span. They have a 1.80 team ERA in those games, allowing two or fewer runs five times.

One of those featured Myers (6-10, 4.71 ERA), who tossed a shutout against Washington on Wednesday. The right-hander allowed nine hits and struck out nine in the 4-0 win, continuing his impressive run since a stint in the minor leagues.

"I think he's definitely capable of pitching like he did tonight," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "We always have high expectations for Brett."

Since he was recalled late last month, Myers is 3-1 with a 1.94 ERA in six starts. The lone loss came to the Dodgers and Kuroda on Aug. 14, but he still gave up only five hits and three runs in seven innings of that game. He has a 2.86 ERA in 11 career appearances against the Dodgers.

He'll face a struggling Los Angeles offense that has scored 14 runs in its last six games, losing five times. Manny Ramirez has not driven in a run over that span after he racked up 21 RBIs in his first 16 games with his new team.

The club stranded 13 runners Sunday, and is batting .222 with men in scoring position in the last six games.

"Too many missed opportunities," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "That's been our situation more than tonight."

The Dodgers, who remain three games back of first-place Arizona in the NL West, are trying to avoid falling below .500 for the first time in 15 days, when they were 58-59. They'll have perhaps their best starting pitcher on the mound to help, as Chad Billingsley looks to win his fourth straight decision and set a new career high in victories.

Billingsley (12-9, 3.10) has allowed three or fewer runs in eight consecutive starts, going 4-1 with a 2.53 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 53 1-3 innings over that span. He was outstanding in his lone career start at Philadelphia, allowing four hits and a run in a 5-2 Dodger win on Aug. 23, 2007.

Los Angeles, which has lost five straight and nine of 11 on the road, has been swept three times in Philadelphia since 2001, though all of the previous sweeps were in three-game series.
