Los Angeles Dodgers Notes, Quotes
--C Russell Martin went 1-for-5 Tuesday, but his first-inning single extended his hitting streak to six games. He is hitting .409 (9-for-22) during the streak, with two doubles and three RBIs. Martin also threw out Hanley Ramirez trying to steal twice and has now thrown out 40 percent (six of 15) of runners who have tried to steal on him this season.

--SS Rafael Furcal doubled in the second inning Tuesday, giving him 16 extra-base hits this month. That tied the previous Los Angeles club record for extra-base hits in March/April. Furcal still has reached base in every Dodgers game this season, and he has 11 doubles, two triples and three home runs.

--RHP Jonathan Broxton was taken for an MRI on his right latissimus dorsi muscle, where he experienced discomfort while pitching in the eighth inning Sunday. Broxton alerted club officials to the situation Monday. The MRI revealed a strain, but Broxton isn't expected to miss significant time and might try to play catch as soon as Tuesday.

--LHP Joe Beimel, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning and got the victory, has not given up a run in 14 of his team-leading 15 appearances this season. He also has allowed just three of 13 inherited runners to score. He has pitched 6 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings over his past nine appearances.

--RHP Jason Schmidt pitched a second simulated game, and he could begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment as soon as the end of this week. But Schmidt balked at saying he was ready for such an assignment, saying that he has had trouble getting loose during each simulated game and that he has yet to work on improving his command. When his rehab does begin, it is expected to last the full 30 days allotted for pitchers.

BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Players since the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles a half-century ago who have driven in five runs in an inning, something Matt Kemp did in the first inning on Saturday night with a sacrifice fly and his first career grand slam. Jeff Kent drove in five in the first inning on May 6, 2005 at Cincinnati, and Dusty Baker did it in the second inning on Sept. 13, 1977. All three instances came in innings in which the Dodgers scored 10 runs.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Somebody who wants to tag you like that has no idea. They have no clue. They have no idea what it takes. Not only that, (but) there is a type of person who goes out there and plays as hard as they can and don't care. And by care, I mean plays with reckless abandon, goes out there and plays the game hard like you're supposed to." -- Dodgers third baseman Nomar Garciaparra, responding to the suggestion that he is injury-prone.
