Furcal, under Torre's blueprint, will sit about once a week this season because of his history of injuries and the fact he plays with such abandon. For his part, Furcal isn't crazy about the plan, but he is on board with it.
"I understand," Furcal said. "(Torre) said he wants to keep me the whole year instead of for a couple of games. This is the best time to do it."
Furcal is sitting because the Dodgers play a day game after a night game. Torre said ideally he also would like to rest Martin in such games, but he didn't want to sit Furcal and Martin in the same game, so Martin's day off was pushed back to Friday.
Torre also said he plans to get fourth outfielder Juan Pierre one or two starts a week but that he hasn't formulated a plan yet for when to do it. Pierre can play left in place of Manny Ramirez, center in place of Matt Kemp and center when Andre Ethier needs a day off because Kemp can then move over to right.
DODGERS 5, PADRES 2: Manny Ramirez finally broke out with three RBIs and two hits, including a tiebreaking, two-run double in the seventh inning. Rafael Furcal, Orlando Hudson and James Loney also had two hits apiece. Chad Billingsley pitched six solid innings, allowing two runs on two hits, although he did walk the first three batters in what became a two-run fifth for the Padres. The Dodgers bullpen has now pitched nine scoreless innings this season.
