Jeff Weaver's first major league victory in 20 months -- his previous one had come for Seattle at Oakland on Sept. 18, 2007 -- wasn't a masterpiece. He was on a 75-pitch limit Tuesday, and manager Joe Torre allowed him to exceed that by 10 just to get him the requisite five innings against Arizona.

Weaver allowed one run and five hits while walking one and striking out six.

"I'm just happy for the team," he said. "We have jumped out to a 12-0 start (at home), so let's see if we can make it 13. It was good to see the offense come out and score three runs early so I didn't have to worry about being too perfect. I only went five, but the end result was that I'll take the victory."

All modesty aside, this was a monumental moment for the veteran right-hander, who spent all of last season with the Class AAA affiliates of the Milwaukee Brewers and Cleveland Indians and began this season with the Dodgers' Class AAA farm club in Albuquerque.

Still trying to re-establish his career after going 7-13 with a 6.20 ERA for Seattle two years ago after signing a one-year, $8,325,000 contract as a free agent, Weaver accepted a no-frills minor league contract with the Dodgers this winter that included no escape clause. He is earning a straight $500,000 to pitch in the majors.

Although he appeared to have pitched well enough in spring training to have warranted a spot on the 25-man roster, it was the front office's inability to clear a 40-man roster spot that banished him to the minors to start the season. Since finally having his contract purchased Thursday, Weaver has made two appearances, pitching nine innings while allowing just one run and nine hits.

DODGERS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 1: Orlando Hudson doubled with one out in the first inning, kicking off a three-run rally that gave the Dodgers all the runs they needed. Hudson had ended the top of the first with a highlight-reel, back-to-the-plate catch in shallow right field, robbing Mark Reynolds of a hit and saving a run. Andre Ethier and James Loney had the Dodgers' RBIs, and the final run scored on an Arizona error.
