Los Angeles Dodgers Notes, Quotes 2008-05-03

Los Angeles Dodgers Notes, Quotes 2008-05-03
--RHP Brad Penny got off to a shaky start, walking four batters in the first four innings with two of them scoring, but his five-inning, three-hit effort was enough to secure the win. Penny is now 14-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 23 career appearances against the Rockies, including winning his past nine decisions against them, and the Dodgers are now 18-5 against the Rockies when Penny starts. Penny also has won his past four starts overall.

--2B Jeff Kent got his first triple of the year in the second inning, matching his total for last season. Kent is now hitting .367 (105 for 286) with 20 home runs and 68 RBIs in 73 career games at Coors Field.

--SS Rafael Furcal hit his team-leading fourth home run, a three-run blast in the sixth inning to cap a seven-run outburst. He also drove in four runs, his first four-RBI game of the season. Furcal has now reached base safely in all 29 of the Dodgers' games this season.

--RHP Cory Wade gave up three unearned runs in the seventh innings, the result of two errors by rookie Blake DeWitt. That ended a streak of 20 consecutive scoreless innings by the Dodgers' bullpen. The pen still has given up just one earned run and six runs overall in its past 29 innings beginning April 24.

--3B Blake DeWitt pinch hit for the first time in his career in the sixth inning and delivered a two-run single up the middle off Ryan Speier, turning a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 lead and putting the Dodgers ahead to stay. DeWitt is now hitting .421 (8 for 19) with runners in scoring position. Three of his four errors this season have come in the past two games.

BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Players since the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles a half-century ago who have driven in five runs in an inning, something Matt Kemp did in the first inning on Saturday night with a sacrifice fly and his first career grand slam. Jeff Kent drove in five in the first inning on May 6, 2005 at Cincinnati, and Dusty Baker did it in the second inning on Sept. 13, 1977. All three instances came in innings in which the Dodgers scored 10 runs.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Somebody who wants to tag you like that has no idea. They have no clue. They have no idea what it takes. Not only that, (but) there is a type of person who goes out there and plays as hard as they can and don't care. And by care, I mean plays with reckless abandon, goes out there and plays the game hard like you're supposed to." -- Dodgers third baseman Nomar Garciaparra, responding to the suggestion that he is injury-prone.
