Los Angeles Dodgers Notes, Quotes 2008-07-30

Los Angeles Dodgers Notes, Quotes 2008-07-30
--RHP Jonathan Broxton retired all four batters he faced, striking out three of them. Broxton is now 5-for-5 in save opportunities since taking over the closer's role from the injured Takashi Saito. Broxton now has a 1.25 ERA (three earned runs, 20 1/3 innings) over his past 21 appearances beginning June 4.

--OF Matt Kemp went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, extending his career-best hitting streak to 16 games. That is the longest streak by a Dodgers player since Andre Ethier's 16-game streak from July 26-Aug. 12, 2006. Kemp and Seattle's Jose Lopez are tied for the longest active streak in the majors.

--LF Juan Pierre recorded his 100th stolen base in his two seasons with the Dodgers when he swiped second in the seventh inning. Pierre has now recorded at least 100 steals with three different clubs, including Colorado (100) and Florida (167). Only three other players in major league history have accomplished that feat.

--INF Nomar Garciaparra hit off a tee before batting practice, then participated in batting practice on the field. Garciaparra exited Sunday's game against Washington with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee after Lastings Milledge slid into him on a tag play at third base. But Garciaparra hasn't been placed on the disabled list because he might be available to pinch-hit.

--1B James Loney went 2-for-4 with two singles, giving him his team-leading 31st multiple-hit game of the season. The two hits came off Giants RHP Matt Cain, against whom Loney is now batting .400 (6-for-15) lifetime. Loney is now hitting .364 (51-for-140) against National League West clubs this season.

--RHP Brad Penny will make a rehab start for Class AAA Las Vegas on Saturday, putting him on target to start Aug. 8 at San Francisco. Penny has been out since June 15 with right shoulder inflammation.

BY THE NUMBERS: .281 -- Batting average for the Dodgers in their first nine games of the second half, during which they averaged 5.2 runs and won six times. The Dodgers hit a collective .253 before the All-Star break, 12th in the National League, while averaging 4.1 runs a game. They entered play Sunday with the third-best second-half batting average in the N.L., trailing only Colorado (.383) and Pittsburgh (.295).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Don isn't going to tell you what you want to hear. He will tell you what he sees. Some players don't like that. They want to hear that they took a good swing when they rolled the ball over, and that's not a good swing. As a coach, your job is obviously to root for these guys, but at least be honest. If you can't be honest, you're not doing your job as a coach, and you're definitely doing a disservice to the athlete." -- Dodgers third-base coach Larry Bowa on what to expect from new hitting coach Don Mattingly.
