Los Angeles Dodgers Notes, Quotes 2008-08-25
--RHP Jason Johnson, who gave up Pedro Feliz's walkoff homer, has a 5.28 ERA in eight relief appearances this season. He has given up four home runs in those games. He also has given up at least two runs in three of those relief appearances.

--RHP Takashi Saito will attempt to throw off a mound before Friday night's game at Arizona. It will mark his first attempt to do so since he left a July 12 game with a sore right elbow and was placed on the disabled list six days later. Saito has a chance to return in September, but if he suffers another setback, he could be looking at Tommy John surgery.

--LHP Joe Beimel, who gave up a leadoff double to Shane Victorino in the bottom of the 11th inning, suffered his first loss since last Sept. 9 at San Francisco. Beimel has made a team-leading 56 appearances this season, pitching a total of 38 innings. He has allowed five runs in his last 19 games, spanning 11 2/3 innings, to raise his ERA from 1.05 to 1.95.

--1B James Loney went 2 for 5 with a pair of singles and drove in a run. Loney now has eight hits in his past 14 at-bats after having one hit in his previous 14 at-bats. His RBI single came with the bases loaded in the first inning, and he is now hitting .368 (7 for 19) for the season with the bases juiced.

--2B Jeff Kent went 3 for 6 with three singles after going 0 for 8 in the two previous games. Kent is now hitting .431 (28 for 65) since manager Joe Torre inserted him into the three hole, immediately in front of Manny Ramirez, on Aug. 7 at St. Louis. By singling in his first two at-bats, he remained a perfect 5 for 5 for his career against Phillies right-hander Joe Blanton before Blanton finally got him to ground into a double play in the fifth inning.

BY THE NUMBERS: .179 -- Collective batting average for the Dodgers from the seventh inning on last week, a stretch during which they had 12 hits in 67 at-bats and scored only two runs on a solo homer by James Loney and an RBI single by Jeff Kent. Before Sunday, they had only two runners in scoring position during those innings, both of which came when they loaded the bases with two outs on Tuesday night against Colorado and failed to score.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Obviously, I'm not as strong or as durable as I once was. It's not easy for me to go out there and throw 120 or 130 pitches anymore. But you have to go out there and play with what you've got and hopefully give your team a good six or seven innings, then let everybody else do their thing after that." -- Greg Maddux, the Dodgers' newly acquired pitcher, when asked what he has left at age 42.
