Los Angeles Dodgers Notes, Quotes 2008-08-26
--SS Nomar Garciaparra was out of the starting lineup. Manager Joe Torre said it was because he was tired. Garciaparra had one hit in his previous 19 at-bats, then ran that to 1-for-20 when he grounded out as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning. Garciaparra is batting .163 (7-for-43) since returning from the disabled list Aug. 12.

--RHP Chad Billingsley turned in a quality start for the sixth time in his last seven starts. But he walked five while striking out only three. Billingsley began the first inning by hitting Jimmy Rollins and got away with it, but when he began the second by walking Jayson Werth, the Phillies made him pay, scoring the only two runs they would need.

--RHP Tanyon Sturtze, who is in the majors for the first time since 2006, hasn't allowed a run in three appearances. He pitched around a leadoff walk to Jimmy Rollins to turn in a scoreless eighth.

--CF Matt Kemp went 3-for-5 with two doubles, giving him his 11th three-hit game of the season and his 40th multiple-hit game. He had been 1-for-13 over his previous three games and 3-for-21 over his previous five.

--1B James Loney cooled off a bit, going 1-for-5. He had gone 8-for-14 over his previous four games. Loney extended his hitting streak to five games, during which he is 9-for-20 (.450), and he leads the club with 71 RBI, including 21 since the All-Star break.

BY THE NUMBERS: .179 -- Collective batting average for the Dodgers from the seventh inning on last week, a stretch during which they had 12 hits in 67 at-bats and scored only two runs on a solo homer by James Loney and an RBI single by Jeff Kent. Before Sunday, they had only two runners in scoring position during those innings, both of which came when they loaded the bases with two outs on Tuesday night against Colorado and failed to score.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Obviously, I'm not as strong or as durable as I once was. It's not easy for me to go out there and throw 120 or 130 pitches anymore. But you have to go out there and play with what you've got and hopefully give your team a good six or seven innings, then let everybody else do their thing after that." -- Greg Maddux, the Dodgers' newly acquired pitcher, when asked what he has left at age 42.
