Los Angeles Dodgers Notes, Quotes 2008-09-01
--2B Jeff Kent will undergo surgery on his left knee Tuesday. If doctors find nothing more than torn cartilage, Kent can begin his rehabilitation program immediately, in which case club officials are holding out hope he can play again this season. But it won't be before Sept. 14, because he was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Saturday, right after Sunday's win over Arizona.

--SS Nomar Garciaparra was out of the lineup for the fourth time in the past seven games and the second consecutive game since he committed two costly errors in Friday night's loss to Arizona. Garciaparra didn't play in either of those two games. He is mired in a 3-for-28 slump and, with backup Angel Berroa playing well and prospect Chin-lung Hu on his way to the majors for the final month, Garciaparra could be in danger of losing his everyday role.

--RHP Derek Lowe improved to 5-7 with a 4.01 ERA in 16 career starts against the Diamondbacks. He has now recorded a quality start in five consecutive games, allowing only seven earned runs in 33 2/3 innings during that span. Lowe has allowed just four runs in 27 1/3 innings over his past four starts.

--1B James Loney went 3-for-5 with three singles, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. He is batting .444 (20 for 45) during the streak. Loney also tied his season high with three hits, the 10th time this season he has had that many in a game.

--LF Manny Ramirez walked three times, two of them intentional, to tie his season high for walks in a game. Ramirez flied out in his only official at-bat, and he is now nine for 14 with three homers and three doubles in four games since manager Joe Torre moved him from fourth to third in the order. Ramirez is now batting .415 (44 for 106) since the Dodgers acquired him from Boston on July 31.

BY THE NUMBERS: 26 -- Seasons since Dodgers manager Joe Torre had been at the helm of a team that lost eight consecutive games, a streak that was broken when the Dodgers dropped eight in a row to Philadelphia, Washington and Arizona to begin a 10-game trip. The streak ended with a 6-2 win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday night. Torre's most recent eight-game losing streak prior to that had come with the Atlanta Braves in 1982.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "He can do so much with his presence in our lineup. He is an absolutely great teammate, and he always has so much energy. To be able to bring that to the clubhouse and onto the field, and with what he can do on a field, he can make a team so much better." -- Dodgers pitcher Chad Billingsley on Manny Ramirez, who has been a refreshing, smiling presence on a club that, at times this season, has been noticeably tense.
