Los Angeles Dodgers Roster Report 2009-04-07

Los Angeles Dodgers Roster Report 2009-04-07
Although the Manny Ramirez signing grabbed all the headlines, it was the Orlando Hudson signing that threw the Dodgers' roster situation into uncertainty after it had appeared such a lock that Blake DeWitt would be the guy who replaced Jeff Kent at second base.

PLAYER NOTES:

--LHP Greg Miller, a former supplemental first-round draft pick who once was the Dodgers' top left-handed pitching prospect, was unconditionally released by the Dodgers, who are open to the possibility of re-signing him to a minor league contract. Miller hasn't been the same since undergoing what was supposed to be minor shoulder surgery during spring training in 2004. In 212 2/3 minor league innings over the past four seasons (discounting a 2005 rehabilitation assignment), Miller has walked 220 batters.

--RHP Claudio Vargas was placed on the 60-day disabled list. Vargas is suffering from elbow tendinitis and hasn't pitched since a disastrous one-inning Cactus League outing against Milwaukee on March 23. The Dodgers signed Vargas to a big-league contract this winter, but it guarantees him only the major league minimum, $400,000, with an additional $1.4 million in incentives based on starts and active-roster time.

--INF Doug Mientkiewicz was added to both the 25- and 40-man rosters. Mientkiewicz signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers on Feb. 26, something manager Joe Torre requested of general manager Ned Colletti. But he wasn't expected to make the team because he didn't fit any of the club's needs at the time. Mientkiewicz will be the Dodgers' primary left-handed pinch hitter, a role he filled in the ninth inning Monday when he struck out against Luke Gregerson.

--RHP Ronald Belisario, who never has pitched above the Class AA level, had his contract purchased before the game. Belisario made the club despite being sent to minor league camp as part of the first round of cuts on March 6, and he never was officially promoted back to big-league camp. But he was borrowed from minor league camp for a March 30 game with Oakland and retired six of seven batters, impressing the organizational brass to the point that they ultimately decided to keep him.
