Dodgersclub.com | Los Angeles Dodgers News, dodgers Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Although the Manny Ramirez signing grabbed all the headlines, it was the Orlando Hudson signing that threw the Dodgers' roster situation into uncertainty after it had appeared such a lock that Blake DeWitt would be the guy who replaced Jeff Kent at second base. DeWitt wound up making the opening-day roster as a reserve.
PLAYER NEWS: --LHP Greg Miller, who was released Monday to clear a 40-man roster spot, was re-signed to a minor league contract. He will begin the season at Inland Empire (San Bernardino, Calif.) in the high Class A California League. Miller has been battling maddening control problems since coming back in 2005 from shoulder surgery during 2004 spring training.
--RHP Jason Schmidt threw 89 pitches Wednesday in an intrasquad game at extended spring training, marking the fourth consecutive time he was able to pitch on his normal four days' rest. But Schmidt, who is still trying to battle his way back from shoulder surgery he underwent almost two years ago, wasn't happy with how he felt, so his next start in extended spring, which had been tentatively slated for Monday, will be pushed back at least a day and possibly longer. Club officials are hopeful Schmidt can begin a rehabilitation assignment at Class AAA Albuquerque sometime in the next couple of weeks.
--OF Delwyn Young, who began the season on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow impingement, is progressing well. He got six at-bats in an extended spring game and is expected to begin a rehabilitation assignment soon, probably at Class AAA Albuquerque. That will buy the Dodgers time with Young, who is out of minor league options and for whom the club doesn't appear to have a spot on its active roster.
--1B James Loney is hitting .500 (6-for-12) for the season. In his past nine games, including six spring training games, he has reached base 18 times in 30 plate appearances. He has been particularly impressive in the Dodgers' first three games with his ability to hit to all fields, with five of his six hits going to left field, center field or third base.
MEDICAL WATCH:
RHP Claudio Vargas (right elbow tendinitis) went on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to April 6.
OF Delwyn Young (right elbow impingement) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He was playing in extended spring training in early April, preparing for a rehab assignment with Class AAA Albuquerque.
RHP Jason Schmidt (right shoulder surgery) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 30. He threw a game in extended spring training on April 8, and he will pitch there again before starting a minor league rehab assignment.
