Los Angeles Dodgers Roster Report 2009-05-05

Los Angeles Dodgers Roster Report 2009-05-05
Fresh from their first four-game sweep of the San Diego Padres at Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers came into the week riding high. At 18-8, the Dodgers were off to their best 26-game start since 1984.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Hiroki Kuroda still doesn't appear to be making progress in his effort to recover from a mild left oblique strain. He is exercising, but he isn't throwing. Dodgers trainer Stan Conte said that if this were later in the season and there was more on the line, Kuroda might be pushed harder in his rehabilitation, but there is no reason to risk doing further damage at such an early juncture.

--LHP Hong-Chih Kuo isn't close to getting on a mound after being placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a left-elbow strain. Club officials remain hopeful that Kuo will return around the time he becomes eligible on May 15. Kuo finally admitted there was something wrong with his elbow after he threw two pitches over the bullpen gate and onto the field while trying to warm up to enter Friday night's game against San Diego.

--LF Manny Ramirez went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, a sacrifice fly and three RBIs. He is hitting .509 (29 for 57) against the Diamondbacks in his career, the highest mark for any active player with at least 50 at-bats against Arizona. Ramirez now has six homers, seven doubles and 19 runs scored in 18 games against the Snakes.

--SS Rafael Furcal went 1-for-4 with a walk and now has reached base in all 24 of the games he has played this season, including 23 starts. Furcal began last season by reaching safely in each of his first 30 games. Although Furcal got off to a slow start and still is hitting just .257 with a .336 on-base percentage, he now has a five-game hitting streak, during which he is batting .318 (7 for 21).

MEDICAL WATCH:

LF Manny Ramirez (hamstrings) did not start on May 3 but was back in the lineup May 4.

LHP Hong-Chih Kuo (left elbow strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 30.

RHP Hiroki Kuroda (strained left oblique) went on the 15-day disabled list April 11. He received a cortisone shot and will need to make a rehab start before rejoining the Dodgers.

RHP Jason Schmidt (right shoulder surgery) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 30. He was still pitching in extended spring training as of late April.

RHP Claudio Vargas (right elbow tendinitis) went on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to April 6. He might return as soon as he's eligible.

INF Doug Mientkiewicz (dislocated right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list April 17, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 30. He had surgery April 20, and he is unlikely to return before September.
