He got serious, too. "I'm happy to be back. Like I told Joe, we have some unfinished business. I'm here to play.''

That he did last season. Revitalized after the trade to a town that adores him, Ramirez hit .396 with 17 homers and 53 runs batted in 53 regular season games. His presence sealed the Dodgers' division championship and first National League Championship Series appearance since 1988.

"When Manny showed up, it was unbelievable,'' said Torre. "Not only his ability but things we didn't know. He has such a work ethic and he wanted to share it with the kids.''

But the "kids" had to wait 141 days to find out if their big daddy was going to be back in the fold. "I feel like I spent Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and Ground Hog day with Scott (Boras),'' said Colletti. "In fact, many days felt like Ground Hog day, but we got it done.''

A "good investment,'' beamed Ramirez. No, he said, he was never frustrated by the process. "First, I already made my money. Two, I have Scott. He's one of the best in the business. It's better late than never. I was looking at this place for eight years.''

Even Boras seemed pleased. His client got the option he wanted, the no-trade clause he wanted and financial status in the marketplace of his peers.

"This contract,'' said Boras, "was set up to allow for a better understanding of the player and the economy.''

But will it last? That's to be seen. For now, the love fest is back on.

Asked about his client's love affair with L.A. fans, Boras said, "He's a superstar, so the performance is the battery for the flashlight. He's bilingual. He's gregarious, comedic, witty. For L.A., we have a standup leftfielder.''
