Saito, 38, cut short his last outing on July 12 due to tightness in his elbow. He was then sent for an MRI, which revealed the sprain. Saito will likely spend the next six weeks rehabbing the injury.

Right-hander Jonathan Broxton, who closed briefly for the Dodgers last season when Saito was dealing with a shoulder injury, will likely assume the closer's role. Broxton has a 3.40 ERA in 39 2/3 innings this season.

Saito had 17 saves to go along with a 2.18 ERA this season.
