Which team could end up making the move for the Texas Rangers' Michael Young?

Which team could end up making the move for the Texas Rangers' Michael Young?
Jan. 13--Trading a proven commodity like Michael Young, should the Texas Rangers captain remain resolute in his preference to be traded rather than play third base, isn't as easy as picking up the phone. -- The $62 million Young, 32, is owed over the next five seasons is the first obstacle to a deal, followed by the no-trade clause that is buried in that contract. -- Young has submitted a list of potential trade partners he wouldn't block, and general manager Jon Daniels said the list is so small that the clubs can be counted on less than one hand. -- Neither Young nor Daniels would reveal the teams on the no-block list, but the following five could have the resources -- money to pay Young, quality players to give in return and a winning pedigree -- to pull off a deal.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Michael Young grew up in Covina, Calif., which is 24.3 miles from Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers, who went to the National League Championship Series last year, have filled their need at shortstop by re-signing Rafael Furcal, but Young would be an upgrade over Blake DeWitt at second base, his first big-league position. The Dodgers have money, or else they wouldn't be pursuing Manny Ramirez, but they also want to add to their starting rotation. Subtracting a quality young arm such as Dallas native Clayton Kershaw isn't a likely scenario.

Boston Red Sox

The 2007 world champions have seen their rival, the New York Yankees, spend at will to build a World Series contender. Boston, meanwhile, has been relatively quiet this off-season. That would change should they trade for Young, who would take the shortstop spot currently patrolled by Jed Lowrie and Julio Lugo. The Red Sox like Lowrie, but Young would give them a proven bat to add to the lineup. The Red Sox have money and a stockpile of starting pitching that includes Nederland native Clay Buchholz and Justin Masterson.

Chicago White Sox

The reigning American League Central champs have a big hole at shortstop after Orlando Cabrera became a free agent. Young, a five-time All-Star, would be a fine replacement. Chicago has a few players who could interest the Rangers. One is outfielder Jermaine Dye, who would give them a power-hitting, right-handed bat in the middle of the lineup. He's due $11.5 million this season, just shy of Young's average salary the next five seasons. Another is young third baseman Josh Fields, the former Oklahoma State quarterback who hit 23 homers as a rookie in 2007.

Chicago Cubs

The Tribune Co. isn't exactly in buy mode, though the Cubs signed Milton Bradley to a three-year, $30 million deal and are considering a trade for Jake Peavy, who is owed $60 million over the next five years. But the NL Central champs have traded Mark DeRosa, and Young would give manager Lou Piniella the flexibility to put Young in a middle-infield rotation with Ryan Theriot and Aaron Miles. In return, the Rangers could seek Rich Hill, a left-handed starter who has fallen from favor, and third-base prospect Josh Vitters.

St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals, only two years removed from a World Series title, have a top-10 minor-league system that includes three quality prospects at third base. David Freese hit .306 with 26 homers last season at Triple-A Memphis, and Allen Craig hit .304 with 22 homers at Double-A Springfield. Both, though, are stuck behind Troy Glaus on the big-league roster and another prospect, Brett Wallace. The Rangers could start any trade conversation with Wallace. Young could return to second base in 2009 and move to shortstop in 2010 to replace future free agent Khalil Greene.
